Previously, I've briefly touched upon alternate contemporary names for some of the classic-era US commemorative coins. Here are two such discussions:

- Classic Commemoratives "Did You Know?" #4

- 1926-39 Oregon Trail Memorial - 1934 Oregon Trail Centennials

The 1937 Battle of Antietam 75th Anniversary half dollar was another classic-era coin that was occasionally referred to by an alternate name.

The coin's obverse design features the conjoined portraits of Union General George McClellan (rear) and Confederate General Robert E. Lee - the Battle's two overall commanders. The Washington County Historical Society sponsored the coin, and did, on occasion, refer to it as the Lee-McClellan half dollar. Such a name effectively puts attention on the obverse's primary subjects and draws it away from the Antietam/Sharpsburg (Union/Confederate) battle naming controversy that some like to argue.

For other of my topics on commemorative coins and medals, including more on the Antietam half dollar, see: Commems Collection.

Appreciate the insight on how the coins actual sponsor referred to it.

Regardless of their views - it's an Antietam half dollar to me.

Same here, considering it states the Battle of Antietam, albeit on the reverse. the portraits on the obverse only reflects those whom was directing the battle.
