Specifically 1970-1979 25 cent pieces. I have looked at the website https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-grading.php
and just want to know when you all are grading these coins do you look at anything specific, like the hair on the Queens head, her crown or her dress draped along her back area? Just wondering what if anything you all focus on when you do your grading. Clearly you look at everything, just wondering if there is an area that you look at to say, Yeah because I see "this area" clearly then I'm grading it at "this"

Thank you!

Interesting question. My take on things that are relatively recent, especially those that post-date the use of silver (e.g. after 1967-68) is that you want to collect things that are exceptionally high grade. There is definitely a place for it. So, you want *all* of the details in the obverse and reverse - mint state all the way. And you want to see as few detracting scratches and dings as possible. The ultimate goal is a coin that could be referred to as 'unimprovable', they're rare.

On the other hand, you might also familiarize yourself with some of the rarer varieties. For example, the 1973 Mountie quarter has a large bust and small bust obverse. The large bust is rarer and therefore more valuable - getting one that is not mint state is definitely a worthwhile endeavour - and they're out there. So too with the 1978 Large/small denticles.

In general, rarer coins in as good condition as you can afford, and more common coins in the best possible condition is a good way to go. This is especially true with the moderns. Otherwise, you're just saving pocket change.

I first look at the hair line you can tell if that is worn first, then look at other areas.

For '70-'79 quarters, unless you have a scarce variety, and there is any wear at all, it's worth face value. If you can't see every blade of hair above her ear or the back of the neck or on the crown tips, then it's not MS and just worth 25 cents. You can't go by the CaC prices listed because those are "hoped" for prices.
