I just bought myself the 2023 RedBook in March. How is it may and the 2024 guide is out.. this just seems ridiculous? Were predicting anything that may change I'm the rest of the year? How can this be accurate for 2024. Just seems like they are putting it out early for sales Edited by KerryKz 05/05/2023 04:19 am

For whatever reason,The Red Book is always a year in advance. I just ordered the 2024 Book a few days ago on ebay. Next April of 2024, they will be selling the 2025 Book.

Also remember the entire flow (which is why we usually caution people about pricing)
Released April n-1 Printed March n-1 Written Jan-Feb n-1 Price survey Q4 n-2
So: The "2024" prices were from a survey from October-December 2022...

Quote: Also remember the entire flow (which is why we usually caution people about pricing) The prices in any Red Book are ballpark at best. The real value of having a current Red Book is the numismatic information it contains.

I already have the new Red Book, and there is not much change from the previous publication. These book are good for 'ball-parking' a price if you are looking to buy or sell.

I usually recommend to get one copy of the Large Print Edition of the RedBook since the info is very useful and this version is far larger text and photos than the compact ones most get, 45% bigger actually. https://whitman.com/a-guide-book-of...large-print/ If you dont need the current pricing you can see if a 2022 or 2023 large print is cheaper now. Since prices are behind even when current, then perhaps grab a small book version which is cheaper for updated pricing every 2-3 years unless your regularly buying/selling. It seems to be better to use for relative pricing anyway such as which date or mint mark of a date should be worth more than others. I bet the early printing also helps in sales, as a 2023 sold in 2022 might still sell in 2022, 2023, and beginning of 2024 thinking its current generally speaking.

My RedBook is 12 years old. What is important to me, is the comparative pricing If I wish to interpolate to current values, I adjust by the accumulated 12 year inflation rate, then compare to the current pricing for sold coins on ebay.

Quote:My RedBook is 12 years old. What is important to me, is the comparative pricing I agree with the comparative pricing as that is what I found also as above. Looking at the ad copy for 2024 it says: New research, new photographs, updated pricing, the latest U.S. Mint data, new auction records, and more! So without someone like dearborn who has it doing a major check, I would give them the benefit of the doubt that there may be useful added info/research and perhaps photos added once in awhile beyond just the pricing updates, and so suggested to pick up an update maybe once every 2-3 years. Mint data, auction records etc might be useful to some. At the moment I have a 2022 large print which is what I suggested as the main edition for the info due to its larger size/photos, and a 2023 small spiral bound.

The 2024 Mega Red is coming out in June, and I have a pre-order in for that. While I only bought a RedBook and Bluebook every four or five years, I've bought every issue of the Mega Red for the supplemental information included. As mentioned by others, the pricing info should only be used for comparative purposes at most, as it's already out-of-date when first published.
