On Sunday night I came across this coin from a bank roll. I found it a little difficult to get a good photo of the area I question. As you may be able to see there is a raised area below the lower part of the earlobe and there is also what looks like a gouge in front (east) of the lower part of the earlobe. The area in front of the ear doesn't have sharp or raised edges like a gouge.
So would this be a die clash or damage or other?

BTW found my first 2000WAM on Thursday.WOOO HOOO.

Thanks for reading,

Tom

Just guessing here, but I would say it's a die clash, looks like it's part of a column to me.I have found a lot of these in various dates.

Yeah, I think your right John1
At first I didn't think the column would match or even show in that area, plus I don't have the software to do an overlay.
After looking at it from that perspective I feel you are on target. The shape and size is consistent. Now how about the area in front of the ear?

The area I was referring to is a pit in front (east) of the lower part of the earlobe, the last pic 2008p5 shows it best. It is probably part of the clash mark.

Thanks for taking a look.

I am not saying just what this is as it is tough to be sure from the picture. I would like to clear up a misconception.

When there is a die clash on a Lincoln Cent, The high points of the die are the areas that are effected.

On the reverse die, the bays of the memorial and not the columns are what causes the damage to the obverse die.

The marks that occur on the obverse are caused by the bays between the columns and not the columns themselves. The bays are a high point on the reverse die that clash with the obverse die. The columns are a low point on the reverse die. You actually see what is outlined by the columns....The bays of the Lincoln Memorial.

Also, the area just under the ear is a higher point on the obverse die and we often see clash marks under the ear as that high spot on the obverse die is effected by the die clash.

Thanks,
Bill
