Really I would have thought a tad higher than AU53. I took some more so you can see the color more accurately.It's really hard to tell, but the whiteness is quite bright, with contrast (to be sure it hasn't been dipped) actually as bright as any of my uncirculated coins.

I would say AU-53 as well with a shot at AU-55 because it looks like wear in the hair. 1878-S is one of the coins of the series that is hammered and usually found in super high grades with sharp details
