Hi everyone! I'm new to collecting Ancient Coins and am curious as to the best way to clean them. Would using an ultra-sonic cleaner be appropriate for these kinds of coins, or should I use more traditional methods like distilled water? Suggestions would be appreciated!

If you use the search line here on CCF you'll find some posts about cleaning ancient coins. Also do a search with your internet browser and on YouTube.

There's a Amazon book "A Method For Cleaning Ancient Bronze Coins" you could buy.

Some use lemon juice, olive oil, etc. to soak coins. Do not use anything harsh like scratch pads, wire brushes you'll damage the coins. Do not over clean them and take off the original patina.

No doubt some CCF members have cleaned ancient coins. Hopefully they'll offer advise. Victor of the site Late Roman Bronze Coin Forum has cleaned many ancient coins. You could contact him for more info.

Are you new to coin collecting in general? You may not want to clean your coins at all depending on what you have. If you are buy lots of uncleaned coins then stick with the distilled water, toothpicks and the things livingwater suggests. If you are unsure if they should be cleaned or not, you may want to post pics here at let people take a look.

to the CCF !

If you intend to clean any ancient bronze coin,
Learn all you can before even considering a start.
Do lots of research on cleaning methods.

1. Does the coin need cleaning ? - yes, if a basic identification is impossible, with the coin 'as is'.

2. What kind(s) of problems does the coin have, that may be addressed with whatever appropriate cleaning method(s) that may be needed.

3. Think carefully about the passivation of bronze disease if present, and the various methods of passivation that museums have used.
