Excellent, thanks for the help!

I'm new to ancient coins.

What is this coin made of? It looks a lot more copper in real life than in the pictures. It also weighs about what a copper coin of this size would.

So this coin would have been minted sometime around 310 AD or so? Is that about right?

Thanks again.

Welcome to the fascinating (and complicated) world of ancient coin collecting.
This coin is a Follis - a large Roman coin made of Bronze (majority copper)
Wildwinds: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/i.html
is an excellent website for identifying Roman imperial coins once you know the ruler.
I think it's made in exactly 315AD
From this page: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric...us_II/t.html
Maximinus II, AE follis. Alexandria. 315 AD. IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS PF AVG, laureate head right with parallel wreath ties, rounded ends (important for the id) / GENIO IMP-ERATORIS, Genius standing left, modius on head, naked but for chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera from which liquid flows, and cornucopiae. Crescent over K in left field. Gamma over P in right field. Mintmark ALE. RIC VI Alexandria 139b.

Wow. Great info.

Many thanks!

This has been in a bag of foreign coins that I've had forever. I used to collect US coins and so I never really gave them a second thought. Just recently I decided to dive in and learn more about foreign coins and I found it.

What a great piece of history!

Please don't tell me I have another hobby now...
