Here is a second Jefferson nickel from a $2 customer wrapped roll from Wells Fargo. Again, trying to understand the grading process, points to identify, photography techniques. This one seems to have a lot more glare even though I used the exact same setup as the first coin. Not entirely sure why.

Hm. In my head, this was XF. Wear along Jefferson's hairline, many face scratches, one big scratch from Liberty across the field. The reverse shows wear on many high points, especially the triangular porch roof. The Monticello window details are also worn.

How does one decide XF vs. AU for a modern coin?

in the case of jeffersons the obv has more weight in grading as the reverses are known to have weak strikes, which is the case here, what you see on the reverse is not wear for the most part.

tip: you cannot look at just one marker on a coin to determine grade. look at the overall coin.

tip: do not use overhead light and use a dark background so that the color does not reflect on the coin.

try this in the future and see if you can get better photos

1. if coin is in holder, remove coin from holder if possible
2. turn off flash
3. place coin on flat surface with indirect natural light. maybe a window sill in a cloudy day. Use a black or white background to avoid any reflective color
4. move phone about 3in from coin
5. zoom in using your fingers until the coin comes into focus and fills the cameras view finder. if your phone has a portrait selection use that and then press and hold on the coin in the view finder to AF lock it
6. hold phone steady. if you cant then place something on either side of the coin (like books) at that distance and lay phone between them. this will hold it steady and allow you to zoom and take the photo without any blurring
