I was not satisfied with the zoom function on my iPad camera for seeing very small features like mint marks, the moon on Eisenhower dollars, or full steps on Jefferson nickels. So the other day I went on Amazon and located a little $8 magnifier called: KINGMAS 60X Clip-On Microscope Magnifier Lens with LED Lights Jeweler Loupe for iPhone, Samsung and More Mobile Phones.

I am frankly shocked at how well it works! Some pics: the clip-on scope, a 1955-D Jefferson nickel mint mark, a 1972 Eisenhower moon, the full steps on a 2021-P Jefferson nickel.

Not too bad but you need to filter the light.

Filter in what way? I assume there's a writeup about that somewhere.

I will also take some pics with just sunlight when it's brighter outside.

use a single layer of tissue paper to cover the light, it will help diffuse the light.
But it sure does take nice pictures!
care to post up a link of this magnifier for us?

Whatever works! There are some clip on macro lens addons on ebay for only around $12-14 'APEXEL 12/24x Macro Phone Camera Lens Kit Clip On for iPhone Android Smartphone' that we have discussed on the forum I bought. This is because the iphone itself can take good photos actually on its own except when you want to zoom in on a part of the coin to take a photo of that part only. Attaching this can then zoom and take photo as normal otherwise. This has a 12x zoon thats plenty for this or 24x but thats not needed for the coins. I bought one from ebay seller "apexel" at the time.

@datadragon: The Apexal Kit is still available via ebay. . .thank you for the tip. At that price, I've decided to give it a try.

I picked up an Apexal clip-on macro lens and it works pretty well. It opens wide enough to accommodate the OtterBox on my iPhone, although it's a bit canted.
My experiences, after just a few uses:
- At 24X, the lens cup need to be either on the coin or very close to it.
- You can't free-hand the pics. I had to find a book of appropriate thickness on which to put my phone to use it.
- The auto-focus on my phone kept changing slightly, so many pics were needed.
I need to practice with it more.
Seen below is a shot of the date of an 1807 Half Cent, along with one copied from the regular photo of the coin.

You can unscrew one of the lenses and then you have 12x which it what I use. Ive mentioned that 24x was too much for coins.

Hope it works as well for you. I was just also experimenting with some different scopes and clip on lenses that might produce good results at the lower costs for people to use, in comparison to the higher cost scopes. http://goccf.com/t/457005#3960682 Those scopes at low cost work well but what I mentioned in general is that you just can't take whole coin photos with those lowest cost scopes, without adding later either Tomlov Digital Microscope Extension Tube ET02 around $18 or replace the base with a taller 10 inch one - Tomlov Digital Microscope Stand Base BS02, Taller 10 inch Adjustable Microscope Base around $39. But then of course you may be closer to the slightly higher cost models with that ability plus maybe some better lighting vs having or buying that separately if needed. Lighting is important as also discussed in that thread, mainly overhead lighting will work better.

is that guy in the top hat wearing a diaper, or is it a 'onesie'?

I think I also mentioned in that thread what series those coins I have are from with Nataraja, (Sanskrit: "Lord of the Dance") the Hindu god Shiva in his form as the cosmic dancer. Just something from a bit different series than your typical mint releases most here focus on since those tend to come in both silver and copper rounds.

Had to cancel my ebay order with Apexal. They claimed they shipped it on 12/20. Never received it. Reported it to ebay. Refund received within three hours. . .will try something else.

Apexel is the manufacturer of that one also so likely just a problem with that shipment. Maybe can try again as ebay has you covered that you will get and checking my order just now I did get a shipping # for my order so I would think you can just make sure to track it better once shipped. That shipping info is also in your orders on ebay if you don't watch your emails. (My ebay->Purchase History then view order details on that order.

This is the url I ordered mine from in case yours was different https://www.ebay.com/itm/354128665022

Its also on Amazon where Amazon ships it to you (ships from Amazon) not the seller, so would not have issue there unless you had issues with Amazon shipping, but was just at a higher cost even with a 10% coupon so why I suggested people might prefer from ebay. https://www.amazon.com/APEXEL-Attac.../B01IMV2QL4/
