Hi Every one

A friend of mine sent me this 1997 quarter..it has a plan edge and as you can see by the pic the reverse is just copper. Is this a mint error?
Any information would be great
Cheers
Steve

Well it could be a missing clad layer, but the color seems to be off a little bit not sure lets see what others have to say on it maybe.

I think it looks like environmental discoloration. But we need the answer to the all important question in circumstances like this "What does it weigh?"

Hi
Thank you for the comments. Here is some additional information on the 1997 quarter.

WEIGHT: 4.7g
DIAMETER: 2.39cm
THICKNESS: 1.4mm

Do they mint other countries coins at the Denver Mint?

Regards
Steve

Yup, the weight is off by about .9g. I think it would be missing the other CuNi layer.

And as for other countries' coins, I don't think they make it at Denver.

BINGO! We have a winner! Definitely a missing clad layer. And from the sharpness of th images we can say that it lost the outer layer before it was struck.

As for the question about foreign coins, other than some 1000 Kroner for Iceland in 2000 (Since they were going to be included in the set with the Lief Erickson dollar the Mint insisted in striking the Iceland coin as well.), the mint has not struck coins for other countries since 1984.

D'oh! I wish I had noticed the posted weight a couple days ago, definitely missing the clad layer being that light. I have a similar one except about 10% of the reverse clad was retained. Yours is probably worth $15-25 but it would be more if it was a State Quarter, those errors tend to be considerably more valuable than the 1965-1998 clad issues.
