In the SF variety, the letters in the legend are flared at the ends - particularly the I in DEI. The Near Maple Leaf is near the rim (wide rim) and the Far Maple Leaf is far from the rim (narrow rim).

When you say wide rim, do you mean the entire rim appears wider? Like the rim is, I guess, deeper into the coin?
