Hey all,
I have never cleaned, dipped or done anything else with a coin, but this one is just kinda ugly to me. It is a 1939 Washington quarter pulled from circulation and has years of accumulated gunk. As it seems acetone is harmless to the actual coin, would this be an effective cleaner for this kind of gunk? If not what is the best solution for safe removal of the years of tarnish?

If it is tarnish/toning, then acetone will not do a thing. Of course, it hurts nothing to try

Allrighty then, since this coin is never going to make if past vg-f at best, I'll use this one as my lab experiment. Thanks all.

It depends on the gunk. I have found that water will remove things such as some adhesives that acetone will not.

Due to not much value it is for sure time for experimentations.
To start with if I were you I would not purchase items that may never be used again. Just a waste of money.
Pending your kitchen's contents, start with baking soda and water solution. Slight rub. If nothing, try vinegar, Tomato sauce, Lemon juice, Lime juice, lighter fluid, hot water, molases, salad dressing, etc. A little of almost anything is worth an attempt.
And of course if any beer in the house, you would just have to try that. I'd stick with a dry Martini first though. NO, not on the coin, drink it.
