2023-P VDB V Lincoln Cent - Is The Extra V Raised Or Incuse?

I was curious about the following.... I was under the impression that the extra V was incuse/sunken. But if you look at the attached photo, it seems the extra V is raised. I am aware that there have been multiple reports of the extra V appearing on 2023-Denver pennies. And reports of the extra V appearing in different locations. But I am unaware of reports of the extra V being raised (vs. incuse/sunken). Questions: (1) Is the extra V supposed to be raised or incuse/sunken? (2) What do you think of the attached photo (re: the raised V) ? Report this Post to the Staff

Hidalgo Valued Member United States 216 Posts	Posted 06/23/2023 3:06 pm The interesting thing about the photo of this coin is that the "VDB" initials also seem raised. And I've seen photos of similar VDB - V pennies where the "VDB" also appear raised. Since I do not have any 2023 pennies in hand, it's difficult for me to determine if the initials and extra V should be raised on incuse/sunken. datadragon Pillar of the Community United States 1648 Posts	Posted 06/23/2023 10:17 pm The original extra V that Mike Diamond investigated is incuse and invariant across a large sample. The only explanation that makes sense at the moment for that one he said is an intentionally modified working hub. However later examples show some variation but these could be contact marks, ejection Strike Doubling or Machine Doubling which also produce extra elements like letters in different positions but might have the other designer's initials duplicated as well if that were the case. It could also be a second working hub was modified if there is another extra V that is the same among samples but different from the first. All depends what is posted from all the different samples to help determine whats going on. Report this Post to the Staff
