Story time.

I bought my son a 2003 S mint set one year because that was the year he was born.

Forgot all about it. He was home recently from the Marines and when he was cleaning out some of his bins he found it.

He gave it to me because he is not into collection coins anymore. The set was cracked up real bad and it looks like he spilled a pop into it.

I figured I had nothing to lose and so I broke it open and looked at the coins under magnification I found weirdness.

The coins are currently soaking in acetone and I will add pictures tomorrow but what do you think?

Lots of bumps on Helen Keller's face.

Thoughts?

Looks like some dried substance on there.

So maybe the sugar from the soda dried and formed those little bumps?

I wonder if the acetone will remove it.

Heavyhog, you have a good point. It might be. I am pretty sure that the Acetone should remove it.

You can try. For me is more from cleaning coins solution but hard to prove.

If a "pop" = soft drink was spilled on this coin and allowed to dry, I'm afraid that there will be quite a bit of damage.

I know for sure that the phosphoric acid in Coca-Cola will pit the finish on a car hood.

Update

After soaking in acetone the bumps on her face are gone. The acetone went yellow with whatever it was dissolving.

I changed it out and am soaking again.

I hope that the cloudiness will also go away.

New pics tomorrow or late tonight.

Thanks everyone.
