Ok, I feel confident that we have identified a FS-501 inverted mint mark. The variety is unique to 1946-S Lincoln wheat cents.
http://goccf.com/t/448732So what is the condition of this coin? After comparing to PCGS Photograde, my own guess is Good 6-8. The hair and ear are very worn. The reverse is in somewhat better condition. However, I have zero experience grading one cent coins.
Don't worry about hurting my feelings. I am just thrilled to have found this coin in my grandfather's envelope of
Wheat penny culls. I understand that it's in rough shape.
Also, maybe someone could walk me through how the variety affects the value on such a worn coin. On one hand, this cent is beat up, but on the other hand, the key feature (the inverted S mint mark) is in decent shape.
It's going in a capsule regardless, but the knowledge of how to evaluate the coin is important to me.
