Errers and Varietys

How in the world could the damage be isolated to someone's face and leave holes with eyes untouched?

Could it be a Die Adjustment strike in that particular area that took off the top layers if you will of the boy's face?

The High Relief has been sanded down leaving the lower relief of his eyes still intact.

Dearborn and Dutch-Tigger Well I'd like to know how one portion of the coin could be so perfectly sanded off like that and the other areas of similar high reliefs not be touched? Could there be a possibility that when minting the coin that the die area for the boy's face was worn to that point before discovery and thus didn't have any detail to stamp? Or melted material filled in that area? It would be impossible for someone to sand an area and stay within the lines like that too wouldn't you say?

A very small sander they are out there. My grandfather who was a woodworker had many small round sanding discs for sanding in small tight areas

I'm still keeping it just in case since I can't believe people would waste their time doing mundane things like that. If someone sanded that and is that good they should be applying their skills to something more worthwhile.

ELM, if the die was worn down, the devises would be bigger not smaller. You have to think about it in reverse. Just a thought, if the planchet was a little light this looks like it is the area on the coin that would not be struck up as good. The womans face is a little weak also. Just a thought. You'd be surprised at the things us older members did with coins back in the 50s and 60s to fill our time.

That makes sense.

I guess so! Now with the Internet I guess fiddling with coins is pretty much a thing of the past unless you are doing it for art. Too much better things to do these days! :-)
