This isn't true... They're $35 cheap... usually $40 or more.

What I meant was that this date comes very nice in the mint set so there are many MS-66 coins in the set. The sets often sell for only four or five dollars each and they contain BU coins worth about $3.50.

By this measure a '71 nickel in MS-66 costs only a dollar. MS-67 examples are so scarce the economics change a lot so they are more expensive in the set.

They sure do. They even buy $100 nickel boxes from ebay for waaaaay more than face. I don't know why people do this or perhaps the auctions are fake?

Actually, some people have lots of problems with their local bank(s) getting boxes of coins - I've seen it spoken of many times on the CRH forum. Some banks are really strict and only deal with businesses and/or people who have accounts at said bank... so them selling them for a premium on ebay is servicing a small group of unfortunate people.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
