Regular followers here know that my primary Canadian collecting interest is the country's commemorative silver dollars (SDs). My collection starts with the 1935 issue (Canada's first commemorative SD) and continues to the present. Though I have not pursued the Loonie series, even though it has a growing number of commemorative and topical issues, years back I did put together a complete set of Canada's nickel dollars (1968-1987).
I "cheated" when assembling my set, as I pursued Mint-packaged coins from Sets or special cases vs. circulation issues. This was largely due to my US location vs. being in Canada (i.e., I had limited access to Canada's circulation coins), and I wasn't looking for this supplementary set to be a collecting challenge. I just wanted to put together a set of attractive examples of each issue at a reasonable price that I could exhibit at coin shows and/or present as my show-and-tell display at my local coin club. The set was not for "investment" by any stretch, just pure "joy of collecting."
Within the nickel dollar series, there are six commemorative issues:
- 1970: Manitoba Centennial
- 1971: British Columbia Centennial
- 1973: Prince Edward Island Centennial
- 1974: Winnipeg Centennial
- 1982: New Canadian Constitution
- 1984: Jacques Cartier 450th Anniversary
I plan on taking a look at each of these commemorative nickel dollars, with the 1970 Manitoba Centennial dollar kicking things off.
