I just picked up a box of nickels today and pulled everything from '69 and earlier because this is where my folder has holes (obviously). My question is, is there any reason to keep any of the '60s years? I've got a ton of '64s many 68s and other assorted 60-ish dates. I was going to throw them in the dump bag and put them back into circulation. I'm holding back everything from the 50s on down...not even sure if there's a reason to hang on to anything later than the 40s. any input on recirculating the the 60s would be much appreciated.

I keep the all b/c of metal content But that ties up a lot of your money I know. So if I did not do that I would keep everything pre 1964

the 64's are extremely common for me, and I only keep the really nice ones.
i also keep everything pre '60, or anything with full steps.

thanks...i was looking for one of those threads. 64's are going back to the bank (unless anyone happens to want a bunch of circulated 64s)

The 1964 was the most produced nickel ever. Total mintage is well over 2 billion coins.
Not going to be collectible anytime soon, I'm afraid.
Here, this will help:

If you can afford to keep them, then keep them; if not, spend them.

I have been keeping every nickel I get now. Eventually they will stop making them and people will start melting them. The thought of these poor innocent nickels being melted sends chills.

The main purpose of keeping them is to give my son something to search through when I introduce him to coin collecting (he is barely one now). Same goes for all of the copper and higher grade zinc Lincoln cents I am hoarding!
