I have noticed that there is often a significant difference in pricing for the same coin at the same grade between NumisMedia (NGC) and PCGS price guides.

But I have never seen a wider disparity between the two guides than for the 1875 CC Twenty Cent Piece. For example, the NumisMedia guide lists this coin, in XF40 condition, at $720 while the PCGS guide lists the same coin at the same grade for $1250. The disparity grows wider as the grades get higher. HA auction results appear to be closer to the PCGS prices than the NumisMedia prices.

What gives? Are the grading standards that very different? Is the actual quality of the two XF40 1875 CC Twenty Cent Pieces that different? I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

PCGS' Price Guide is very high-end retail on most coins. Seldom are those prices realized unless you have a premium quality, PCGS certified coin in the right place when the right buyer shows up. I find Numismedia to be more accurate in today's retail market. Both guides are for certified, problem-free coins.

Don't be in a hurry to buy this 20 center. There are a lot around and you can be choosey.

Price is important here, as the budget is limited. If I can pick this one off for a good price, it may be my best shot for awhile. Most I have seen in XF/AU grades are out of my price range. It's tough to lay off if the price is right.

"Price Guides" are meaningless for relatively rare coins like this one. The only gauge of value is what people have paid for similar coins in the past. You just have to look in the mirror and decide what you're willing to pay for the coin - that's what everyone else who wants it is doing.

Geeez...If I have to look in the mirror, then maybe it's time to switch hobbies....

I have just been outbid, and have to walk away from this one, too. Thanks for the info and the encouragement. Maybe when I hit the lottery tonight.....

Not that they do this but imagine if your coin is listed on their price guides as very expensive. You might just be tempted to have them slab it. However, if your coin is just an average price you might just say maybe someday. So it really pays for PCGS to say all coins are way up there in value.
