Hello CCF, with limited budget, finding examples of EAC that I find interesting and appealing to me makes for a slow hunt. This one hit the mark at $84. This is the widely spaced 3 variety with the smushed together double zeros on the reverse fraction. Late die state coin causing the weak ES in states and the nearly absent Half Cent on the reverse. I'm thinking some retoning post cleaning. I figure about VG-10 details. What say you?

Ageree, G or possibly VG details.

i cant get her to VG either. G6 and the Half Cent area looks suspect for damage. old cleaning but re-toned and probably acceptable

I've seen such obliteration on the reverse before and I don't think's it's damaged. Many of the planchets were very poor quality. In fact this coin looks a bit better than the G-6 example on photograde.

I posted on this particular coin variety a while back, link below, to which Paralyse provided some informative feedback. I included pics of an XF-45 and F-15 which both reflect the issues with the reverse. Definitely not damage, just how they came out of the mint in that time period for this variety. http://goccf.com/t/445592

I think this coin is VG8. The weakness at the center of the reverse is a die/strike artifact, not damage.
The color is great, the fields and surfaces look just fine for the most part. It has good overall eye appeal. There is a little area of concern at ES, and also below NT. The marks at CE in CENT should be checked for an older "cathouse" alteration (E to U) -- it's hard to tell from the photos. I suspect it's just random marks and not deliberate, but it merits a closer look just to be on the safe side!

Question is not the grade, but whether it will grade straight.

I bet it will grade straight. If there was a cleaning it was a long, long time ago. The cameo looks genuine. The obfuscation on the reverse is a known die-planchet issue.

I'd put money on a straight grade unless the marks I noted at CE in CENT are intentional and not random.

I'm not sure it's worth the cost of grading, even if straight.

No intention of putting it in a slab, more just for feedback of my own novice skills at evaluating coins.
Paralyse, I'll take a closer look at the points you mention.
Thanks everyone!

had to take a second look at this one. I love the early coppers. I'm going to bump my grade to VG8 as well do the overall coin including the nice rims and lettering. I'm also going straight grade on her.
