I know that Sovereigns gave out 1,2,3,4 pence silver sets to the poor
in a Maundy ceremony, but how do you tell a common 3 pence silver coin
from a Maundy 3 pence piece?

G'day,
I disagree with E'zento.
I believe that maundy and normal 3d & 4d were the same sizes, respectively.
For many years, the maundy & normal 3d are indistinguishable.
The circulation silver 4d had a Britannia reverse, so there's no problem there.

From 1838 to 1926 the Silver threepence was identical design to the maundy threepence, except for some of the 1887 and 1893 coins which were smaller. so you are both correct.
Maundy coins are usually better struck and more prooflike. That's the only way to tell...

You said "Gave out", not sure if this was a typo but just to clarify, they still do.
