2020-P-Jefferson-Nickel-WDDR--Double-In-Door
After weeks of casual CRH and looking at nickels under magnification, I believe that I have finally run across one of the many double-in-the-doorway nickels. Identifying the particular flavor of WDDR is proving to be a challenge, as there are so many different variations. 7, 10, 15, 17, 26 all seem like candidates.

VDDR-003 and -008 seem like they have some potential. I plan to dig into the tiny die markers tomorrow in the sunlight. Maybe I can get it narrowed down to one of the known examples.

There's a gazillion of these doubles-in-doors for all the 2006-current nickels.

Although the text says VIII Tilted Hub, I believe that many such doubles were classified as VIII until IX was introduced for single squeeze hubbing. The door doubles seem to be a Class IX, type 1 Jolted. The IX-1 is always close to the center of the die. Examples include the extra fingers holding the book on 2009 Lincoln cents, the doubles in doors on 2006-2023 Jefferson nickels, and the doubled trees on the 2005 Ocean in View Jefferson nickels.

The theory is that as the convex die blank makes contact with the hub, it has not yet deformed enough to be snug with the collar. As the tip begins to crush into the hub, the die can suddenly pop into correct alignment. Whatever part of the die tip was touching the hub devices gets doubled. The fingers, the doorway, the trees are all where the die and hub made initial contact, and then it got jolted sideways a tiny distance to cause the double.

That's how I've understood all my reading on the subject of Class VIII/IX doubled dies thus far.
