Hoping someone can ID the Newcomb variety of this 1817 large cent. I was thinking N7 but I don't see the mouse on the head but there is a spike or something or possibly N8. They were the only two varieties I could find with a double denticle on the reverse below the N of United.

I don't have a book for Newcomb varieties but after considerable web searching, I think I have identified it as N8- mouse on head. Need someone with knowledge to confirm.

You are correct, it is the middle die stage of N-8 with a small mouse. (Early stage has no mouse, late stage has a larger mouse.)

Thank you Conder, I only collect a few of these earlier coppers here and there thus no real need for a book on Newcomb varieties. Glad the experts here can help me. I've also heard of this variety being called "peeking mouse".

Wow, just when I thought I was making progress! Can someone point me in the right direction where I'm going wrong? Looking specifically at the "1" in the date, I would have bet this could NOT be a Newcomb 8 (or 10, 11, 12 for that matter). Am I not reading / understanding the attached snip correctly? HELP!

And Thanks...

This shows why you need the specific books for a given series. My guess is that image is from the Breen Encyclopedia of US and Colonial coins. N-8, 10, 11, and 12 all have wide dates, but they all also come from different obv dies and the date spacing is different on each of them. The pictured coin is N-11 and it does have the 1 very far left. It is even further left on N-12. The N-8 is a "wide date", but it is much more compact than on the other three.

You hit the nail on the head, Conder, it is Breens. I guess the title " .... Breens COMPLETE Encyclopedia ...." (capitalization mine) is a bit misleading. So now the S.O. can also say "You need ANOTHER book!?!?" in addition to "..... another coin". LOL
