Papal States - Baiocco - Possible Fakes

Paul St Louis Valued Member United States 127 Posts	Posted 08/21/2023 1:20 pm Back when I first started collecting coins in the stone age, I was excited to find several Papal States Baioccos on ebay. In going back over inventory, weighs show instead of the expected 12.76 gr an average of 9.5 - 10.1g. All are underweight, so is there a possibility of valid weight fluctuations on these old coins? I suspect not. Here are some photos. Example 1850, 9.5gr: This one I purchased as a known copy, but including for discussion and review. 1849, 10.1 gr: I suspect wavy lines in the lower left shield are a giveaway in terms of validity. Not sure if this is similar to Britain's early 1800's shortage of copper coins whereby contemporary counterfeits were accepted as currency and suffered everyday abuse. I'm stumped on this one. I can find Papal 1 baiocco coins from these dates at the weights you have: https://www.ma-shops.com/cdma/item.php?id=860177 https://www.ma-shops.com/cgb/item.php?id=222919 These are highly reputable sellers who don't get the basics wrong.
