I bought a 1987 Falkland Islands two pence coin at the local coin store today. It was only 33 cents. It features the queen on the obverse and an Upland Goose (Chloephaga picta) on the reverse. Except for numerous nasty fingerprints, it appears to be uncirculated.

What do you want to bet that it has never actually been anywhere close to the Falkland Islands?

Falkland Islands coins are actually used on the Falkland Islands, and 1987 was a year that circulation coins were struck and issued, but coin sets dated 1987 were also made. Both the mint set coins and circulation coins were struck at the British Royal Mint, so are probably identical with no way to tell them apart.

So it's possible that your coin has been busted out of a set and mis-handled. It's also possible it was found in circulation in the Falklands, by a tourist who went on an Antarctic cruise or some such. So in that sense, it's impossible to know whether your coin ever touched ground in the Falklands.

Yes, they definitely do circulate! I've found several Falkland Islands coins in circulation in England. Some are brought back by members of the British Army serving there (there are barracks in my hometown, which may explain why I seem to get more than might be expected) and others, as Sap says, may have been brought back by passengers on cruise ships and spent in the UK. A colleague went to the Falkland Islands a few years ago and brought me back a few coins he got in change there.

I was in the Falklands with the Army in 1983 and 1984 and used many of the Falklands coins whilst there. I recently came across a pile I brought back with me from that time. Unfortunately I was no coin collector in those days, so they are all taped to cardboard and look awful! One day I will get down to cleaning them up, but they are pretty common so no fortune hiding there I fear.
