Hello. I just came across a 1984 penny. As we all know kw, the 4 at the end of the year date is usually very strong, stout-looking wide and evident as an obvious 4. It is spaced appropriately and clearly. But I discovered one that the 4 does not seem to be a 4 at all and there is no 1-sided slant but 2 slants at a sharp and nearly vertical angle, and is wedged up very tightly near the 8 that comes before it. It looks just like a skinny "A" so I do not know what this means, neither if whatever it means equates to probable valuable consideration. Has anybody ever heard of this where the "4" can be an "A" and placed much closer to the 8?

Quite blurry, but undoubtedly just some sort of PMD.

I assume that the coin on the left is your curious one, and the coin on the right is a common 1984 LMC for comparison. If I am correct, the coin on the left is too blurry to make out the oddity you describe. The blurred picture certainly looks more like an "A" than a "4" but it's impossible to really see it through the blur and angle of the photo. Could you please show us a clearer photo?

CoinzQuestionz,
to CCF.
We need a better photo to really help you. Your coin might be a 1981 or a 1984 with circulation damage.

This should be an easy one to resolve, even without better pics: weigh it. If it weighs the same as a zincoln, it can't be 1981, and if it weighs the same as a bronze, it can't be 1984.

we really need a better image of the coin in question -
an accurate weight will tell us if it is an 81 or 84 - copper vs zinc...

The blurriness is due to some scuffing or damage. We are trying to use a non-abrasive cleaner with no brushing, semi passive style. Hopefully it will clarify the image. Our phonsalso dp not have good cameras in them. We don't know what PMD is or what weight we need to check for, but some of you already have said something about Zinc vs copper, and have said something about 81? Can someone please patiently clarify what is meant by these things?

Well, PMD is (and if you click on the blue link you can read up on it) is Post Mint Damage.
we are estimating that your coin is either an 81 or an 84, Well if your coin is an 81, it will weigh 3.11 grams and is copper, and if it is an 84, it will weigh 2.5 grams and will be a zinc cent.

You see, near the end of 1982 the mint switched from full copper coins to Zinc core, coper plated coin. So since we know the weights around, before and after 1982, we can easily determine the correct date by the weight.
