Quote:That's WDDO-006 "Best Of" variety. Nice find! http://doubleddie.com/1542214.html thanks! I thought all the spots (experimental rinse?) made it kind of "meh", but it looks like all of the DDOs on that site for that year have them too... what makes it 'best of'?

There are thousands of varieties on Wexler's site. He always put "best of" on the ones that were stronger or generally more interesting.

Not quite. It's the best varieties from among all the varieties out there. Many doubled dies are just very minor, but he lists them. A "best of" will be a variety that is just stronger or more interesting than most of the varieties.

Yes, it means it's a variety that Wexler considers to be a particularly good doubled die with either a lot of eye appeal or else of numismatic interest. I generally tend to agree with his designations, although I think there are certain things he's very partial to (like light doubling of full memorial columns on early to mid 90s cents) that get more best of designations than they deserve.

Nice find. shathe, just wondering if you checked all three reference sites we all need to check before you posted here on CCF. At first look it looks like a DDO,so I would have checked all three sites for a match. If I found what I thought was an attribution number I would then post here on CCF and include the possible attribution number to get confermation of my research. By checking all three sites it would help me learn what to look for when searching coins.Hope that makes sense to you and the other members. John1

By "all three sites", John means CopperCoins.com, Variety Vista, and Wexler's doubled dies. Definitely an immediately visible DDO. Congratulations on your find!

John1 sorry, still relatively new, and I'm just sort of realizing that almost everything has already been discovered and documented. I have wexler's and vista bookmarked but used them more like a general information source. I had to play around with the site a little today on wexler just to find the 'listings' (kind of hard to find until you know what you are looking for...). anywho, i'll try to do more specific research before posting next time. and, again, thanks all. :)

Quote: kind of hard to find until you know what you are looking for Yup, that's probably the steepest part of the learning curve. All the reference sites are geared towards folks who already know how to use the reference sites, and also already know specifically what features they are looking for. It can be a little intimidating, but if you slog through the process 3-4 times, it gets much, much easier.
