PCGS - Collectors know the 1862 Indian cent as a common, well-struck issue, but this one features an obverse die cap error. It happens when a blank planchet gets stuck to the die and is struck repeatedly, eventually doming around the die and creating the cap, splitting into a fan shape. Known as one of the greatest U.S. error coins, it carries the legendary Simpson pedigree, and for good reason.
