Sorry, I posted the original while I was in the process of taking pictures and reducing the file size to post.

Do these pennies typically have rims that look like the rim of a proof penny? I have one with no mint mark that is clearly copper (It sounds entirely different to other pennies when (very carefully) dropped), and the rim seems to be squared off like a proof. Is that the norm for these?

comparing a coin with another 6 years apart in usually not a great comparison. Especially when one has the potential of being a full copper coin and the other zinc. The dies that the mint uses change over the years.

umm, forgot to add: to the post..

Thanks!

Yeah, I'm currently comparing it to some other 1982 pennies I have. They do seem to have a much more squarish looking rim overall, but the rim for the one in question does still look different. I'll try to get some better pictures. Probably just a totally normal penny with wear that's making the rim look odd to me.

Thanks, everyone :)

It's probably just worn in such a way that makes it looks different from the others. Here is another picture next to another 1982 penny. The rims do still look different, but probably just the way it's worn down over time vs one that's more visible due to being less worn.

I finally managed to get a few pictures that do a little better showing the difference between the two. The first two pictures show the differences in the rims side by side. The rim of the one coin seems to be missing the bezel that's clearly visible all the way around the other coin. The last one shows something else going on with the rim that looks to be some kind of damage potentially? Honestly not sure on that one. Definitely on board with this just being a regular penny with nothing special going on, just wanted to get a few better pictures.

The only thing I found that looks similar to the way the edge is worn/smoothed vs the other coin are pictures of various Dryer Coins. Could this possibly be a very early stage Dryer Coin?

Not a Dryer Coin. The squarish rim might be because of excessive minting pressure or maybe a new set of dies was used, all three dies that is. Just thinking out loud though. You might also want to buy a scale to weigh your coins.

A scale is next on my list of things to purchase :)

I am very new to all of this and only just graduated from using my daughter's toy magnifying glass to look at coins to using a cheap magnifying glass ordered from Amazon, lol. Reading through some of the topics here has already taught me so much more than two weeks of googling. I love learning about this stuff!

Do you think it could be some kind of filled die error maybe? Grease filling the bezel in the die and also causing the raised bit in the last picture?
