American Numismatic Society - Once the Port of New York was accessible to the Great Lakes, thanks to the Erie Canal, Americans turned their attention to connecting the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. This dream became a reality with the construction of the Illinois and Michigan (I&M) Canal in the 1830s. ANS Member Dale Lukanich will present a brief history of the building project—the politics, labor strife, and cost overruns—and look at the three series of scrip issued by The State Bank of Illinois specifically for the I&M Canal.
