In 1947, India became independent from England. The coins prior to that time had "Dei Gratia Rex et Ind Imp" on the obverse which means "By the Grace of God, King and Emperor of India" It was necessary to remove the "et Ind Imp" part, but the new dies were not ready til the end of 1948, so 1947(ML) coins were struck in the interim to indicate the minted date was actually 1948 and not 1947.
