My husband's grandparents have a pretty large coin collection. They both recently passed away and so the family has been trying to clear the home. We came upon a little box with two coins in it. It was odd because they were seperated from the rest of the collection. The one that stuck out was the 1982 quarter only because it looked pretty rough. The rest of their collection are all in mint condition. None of us know anything about coins so I said I would google it. I still don't see anything "special" about it other than it is alot lighter than the other quarters. Can someone PLEASE look at this and see if we are missing something? Thank you all so much!

Hello Ace and

This looks to me like a coin that's been buried in acidic soil and has been subject to environmental damage. Maybe your husband's grandparents dug it up somewhere and kept it for sentimental reasons as a 'lucky' coin? Or, if they owned a metal detector, they could have found it with that.

Agreed, looks like a corroded quarter. Nothing special here and numismatic value is 25 cents. Perhaps the sentimental value is higher.

I agree with it being environmental damage.

To CCF! I agree with NumisRob. It's environmental damage and worth 25 cents.

Nothing special about this corroded quarter unless you want to take into account that it would be the 50th anniversary of the Washington quarter initial introduction..
