Another if you would please John; Small size, privy crescent/mullet, sceptres to the outer edge. FRAN in the legend. Type three or four? What would be the Everson attribution? Thank you.
This is a Rose farthing. The obverse has a single-arched crown and longer legends, while the reverse has a double rose, so it is Everson Rose Type 4a/3 (mule) 180; Spink 3204. These always have crescent/mullet and are common. It's not always so easy to see the detail, though.
Well, Lord Maltravers did make the Rose farthings. They all have inner circles too and the early ones have longer legends with CAROLVS MAG BRIT, FRAN HIB instead of CAROLV MA BRI, FRA HI. But you can't get a mule of a Maltravers and a Rose - the flans are vastly different and made in different ways - so the rose really does distinguish them.
Indeed, and it was those being listed on the same page of my Spink below the standard Maltravers farthings which also led to my M/R confusion. Thanks again John C. One or two more over the weekend....
