Hello and I found this Lil gem few days ago and I have not seem anything like this before? It is rusted completely through and is almost unrecognizable and I am wondering if anyone can. Tell me what these coins are made of and how does this happen ?

Sorry I forgot to mention that it is a 2001 volunteer Canadian dime .. it took me a bit to figure that out since it is pretty damaged..

It's essentially a steel core with 3 platings .... thin coat of nickel, then copper, then nickel again over a steel core. The whole coin is 92% steel, so there's your rust.

thanks ikandiggit, I have had computers since 5 1/4 inch disks, but somethings are hard to embed into an older brain.

I remember when the Commodore 64 and a dot matrix printer were all the rage. Lots of fun and trial & error.
I too have a few of the "die bleeds" 2001 Volunteer dimes. Went and found them in my extra coins after reading this topic. Thanks
