I have collected souvenir cards for about 50 years ago though I have not been collecting steadfastly for the past couple of decades. Anyway, I was going through my closet and came upon a bunch of them and thought to check their current value on ebay. I found a number of listings that appear to be souvenir cards that have had the images closely cut out. They've been sent to PCGS and graded and placed in "slabs" such as the ones for legitimate currency. These cutouts are selling for $150 while their full souvenir card counterparts are selling for less than 1/10 the price. I don't get it. Perhaps these are some other recently offered product I'm unaware of. If they're simply cutouts as they appear to be I wouldn't think PCGS would even grade them. They seem to come from one seller. Maybe someone is trying to prove PT Barnum's old adage? If you go to ebay and search BEP souvenir card and list by highest price first, they should come up with a minimum of scrolling.

@howell1018: I'm also somewhat surprised by PCGS grading these uniface "notes" that have been cut out of Souvenir cards - I guess the grading rules aren't quite as strict as they once were.

I took a look at the ebay listings you referenced, and noticed that the $150 price is an "Asking Price" that rarely becomes a "Sold Price" - most of the seller's other offerings sell for significantly less. The one I found that did sell for $150 was that of the face of the 1899 $5 Silver Certificate with the Native American Chief - a very popular vignette due to its subject. I would bet that the subject/theme was a primary driver for the full-price sale.

I guess some collectors just prefer graded items!

That is absolutely ridiculous, howell1018 and commems. There is a listing for the original card @ $18/best offer. Does PCGS certification add > $130 in value to a mutilated sample? Only a fool would think so.
