This Caracalla hemiassarion Ex Dr. Hubert Lanz, was attributed as Varbanov 2764 but there was no obverse legend on the tag. Research showed the obverse legend for Varbanov 2764 should read ANTΩNEINOC - AVT K M AYP CE. This legend does not tie in with the OP coin.

Wildwinds shows a coin attributed as Varbanov 2765, but though the obverse legend ANTΩNEINOC - ΠIOC AYΓO fits, the bust of Caracalla is cuirassed.

Wildwinds also shows a Varbanov 2767, but the legend reads ANTΩNINOC - AVT K M AVR.

There is a coin on VCoins with a slightly different legend, ANTΩNEINOC - ΠOIC AYΓO Where Caracalla is cuirassed again, listed as Varbanov 2766.

The Corpus-Nummorum site pictures a plaster cast of a coin in the University of Bukarest which has a similar bust to the OP coin and the legend ANTΩNEINOC - ΠIOC AYΓO which appears to be a match, attributed as Varbanov 2764 - 2767.

Can anyone help with a definitive Varbnov number for this coin, thanks.

I happen to have the thee volumes by Varbanov entitled Greek Imperial Coins. Volume III is Thrace. Page 293 is the start of Caracalla. There are 14 obverse legends. Your coin has the obverse legend ANTΩNEINOC - ΠIOC AYΓO which Varbanov calls B. Your coin shows the emperor with laureate head right which Varbanov calls b. Your reverse legend is TPAIANO ΠOΛEITΩN
Varbanov 2764 is Bb with the reverse a flaming altar and the legend TPAIANOΠOΛEITΩN. His references are listed: if you want them let me know; they are not in English. He calls the coin R4 so there are 200-500 'exemplars'.
Varbanov 2737 carries the obverse legend ANTΩNEINOC - AVT K M AYP CE.
So I believe your classification as Varbanov 2764 is totally correct and congratulations on a superb example.

Many thanks for the reply and information regarding this coin, @crustedcoin.

I had no luck through on-line searches in finding concrete information regarding the coin, so the information you have provided has been invaluable. After all this time I can now put the coin "to bed" with the correct attribution.

Thanks again,
Jim
