I believe this is a cufflink, but I'm not sure. I do not have the item in hand to examine. I'm hoping for more info on the piece and an idea of it's collectibility. Thanks.

Looks like a lapel pin for a civil war veteran. Lapel pins are typically issued as a symbol of honorable discharge from service.

Here is an ebay auction for a GAR medal that would have accompanied the lapel pin. The medals are typically numbered on the edge and they were actually manufactured from melted down confederate cannons.

The G.A.R. was a fraternal organization founded in 1866 in Decatur, IL. to honor Civil War Veterans. It was dissolved in 1956 with the death of it's last member. Your lapel pin could have been manufactured anywhere between 1866 and 1956. There are currently a few of these lapel pins on ebay in the $25- $30 range.
