I recently acquired an interesting 1853 Swedish Riksdaler that appears to be monogrammed (middle of the shield) and a signature engraved on the bottom.
Aside from the obvious hole in the top....
The middle of the shield appears to be "pressed in" to allow a clean place for the monogramming to be engraved. What I find interesting (honestly the whole coin is interesting) is the "pressing" follows the curvature of the sides of the shield perfectly. Perhaps a tool was made specifically for this. By the way, I can't make out the monogrammed letters. So any help on this would also be nice.
The bottom is also "pressed" and has the name "C.C Merritt" engraved. The "pressing" is perfectly oriented so it doesn't disturb 1R 1853 SP.
The engravings are worn enough that they could be as old as the coin. The reverse also appears to be polished more than the obverse.
