I am trying to see the difference between coins that are improperly annealed vs environmentally damaged. Here are some samples. Most had to be taken with a flash.

All look like ED to me. To learn the difference, check out slabbed annealing errors, PCGS, NGC, ANACS.

As I understand it, one of the distinguishing features is the edge should be normal because the improper annealing happens to the sheet metal. But slabbed coins never let you see the edge, and most pictures are of the coin faces anyway.

yes, examine the TPG's to see what they look like,
However in general, Improperly annealed coins will show the mint luster, while toned or dirty coin will not. Looking at the edge will often help as well.

Contra Brandmeister, improper annealing errors occur after the blanks are punched out. As a result, the edge is usually affected.

Just noticed that this thread had been updated. Obviously Mike Diamond is the expert, so I stand corrected. The source of the bad information about clean edges was the following Coin Talk article. The person actually owns a slabbed black beauty 1959 nickel, so the information sounded credible to me.

https://www.cointalk.com/threads/im...ckel.341093/

So does that mean that the 2006-D nickel from a prior thread could possibly be improperly annealed? Or do we still think that attacked by acid (particularly amino acid) is the correct diagnosis?
