Yesterday I came across information on the 1940 Proof nickel with Reverse of 1938. I was quite intrigued, so I began reading about early proof nickels and looking at PCGS catalogs.

That's where I encountered the re-engraved obverse varieties for the 1938 Proof nickel. These are FS-401 thru 403. The listings are not in my copy of CPG 5.1. Were they new in CPG 6.1? Are they older listings that got dropped for space (or more capitalistic reasons)? I have found images online and some scattered articles that were pre-listing. But I have not found the actual text of the entries anywhere yet. Does anyone have a resource to help?

I would also be interested to know if there are additional non-PCGS accredited CPG listings for the pre-WWII nickel proofs.

I should have added, there was a good write-up by Dr. Coop in 2016:

The VV link in Dr. Coop's article is broken, so here is the working link:

As before, though, I am still keen to know what the actual CPG FS-401/402/403 entries actually say. There seems to be quite a bit of detail swept under the rug about these varieties. Particularly the comment to the effect that "every 1938 proof die seems to have had some degree of manual engraving".

1939 Reverse 1938

Quote:
This was the first year of production for Jefferson nickels, and the huge mintage of 1939(P) clearly reflects this fact. Both the obverse and reverse master hubs were revised from the 1938 coinage, the obverse at the very beginning of 1939 and the reverse a little later, after minting had already commenced. Thus, a minority of 1939(P) nickels have the old style reverse, with its indistinct central features of Monticello. 1939(P) Rev of 38 nickels are relatively scarce across all grades, though heavily worn pieces are probably indistinguishable as to their reverse subtype. Examples having any degree of full steps are extremely rare. Since NGC did not distinguish the two reverses for many years, the numbers below are incomplete and may rise as previously certified coins are resubmitted for the complete description.

1939 Reverse 1940

Quote:
Early in 1939 the reverse of this coin type was revised to sharpen features of Monticello, and this is most visible in the more distinct steps and portico of Monticello. This Rev of 39 subtype comprises the vast majority of 1939(P) nickels, and it is far more likely to show either 5FS or 6FS. Even so, neither attribute is common for this date/mint issue. There are two very popular doubled-die reverse varieties for this issue, the latter one actually having some quadrupling of the design. In NGC's early years these varieties were lumped together as simply DOUBLED DIE REV, but they are now distinguished and listed under the Rev of 40 heading.

Here the photo for the Reverse Distinction:

I don't see anything on BVC. The re-engraved varieties aren't doubled dies. If Brian has a different section on his site for other varieties, I haven't found it yet.
