Here's another "because I was curious and I like numbers" post that summarizes the number of US commemorative programs (not individual coins) approved during the classic era by the number of States in the Union at the time of the coin program's approval.

44 States (44th State - Wyoming - was admitted on July 10, 1890)

- 2 (World's Columbian Exposition Half Dollar and Quarter Dollar)

45 States (Utah was admitted January 4, 1896)

- 3 (Lafayette Dollar, Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollars and Lewis & Clark Exposition Gold Dollars)

48 States (Oklahoma was admitted November 15, 1907, New Mexico on January 6, 1912 and Arizona on February 14, 1912)

- 48 (All other half dollar programs, all silver/gold combination programs and William McKinley Gold Dollars)

49 States (Alaska was admitted January 3, 1959)

- 0

50 States (Hawaii was admitted August 21, 1959)

- 0

This is an intriguing perspective.

Once I figured out where you were going I quickly arrived at the conclusion that the vast majority were approved when the Union had 48 states.

Correct! We (Americans) are so used to thinking in terms of "50 States" that I thought it might be interesting to alter the perspective a bit.
