In circulation, I often find the 1973 RCMP quarter.

Usually, it looks like this:

Matte-Vs-Shiny-1973-Quarter

I recently received my grandfather's coin collection and in it, his 1973 quarters all look like this:

Matte-Vs-Shiny-1973-Quarter

Why the difference? Are they both circulation coins? Do nickel coins become shiner the more circulated they are?

Thank you for your help!

We need a pic of the other side to see if they are large or small bust.

drolar The difference in appearance is possibly due to environmental causes an/or handling. There is a large and small bust variety, the large bust being the rarer.

Thank you both of you! All of them seem to be small bust. Cheers

The "matte finish" may be due to storage - if they were in a PVC plastic album, it could be a layer of PVC haze, for example.
