On a search for Perinthos/Perinthus and particularly this coin, I did find a little about the city/town but next to nothing about the coin. On a Perinthos ACSearch there appeared to be very little with a tripod reverse.

Wildwinds (https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/mou...inthos.html) did have an entry "Moushmov 4409 Youthful male head right. Rev. : ΠEPINΘIΩN. Tripod." which matches the auction description, but no image. The reverse Inscription: ΠEPIN-ΘIΩN does match the reverse of the coin. Can anyone provide a link to a similar coin for comparison?

Once again many thanks, Bob.

The obverses of the lauriate head of Apollo and the youthful male head are strikingly similar, as are the reverses. I'll add the "forumancientcoins" description to the file. Going by the diameters and weights it looks like my coin is half the value of the "forumancientcoins" one.

I was rather skeptical of the Mid 1st Century A.D. date given for my coin, and the c. late 3rd - mid 1st century B.C. given by "forumancientcoins" seems more appropriate.

Thank you,
Jim

Jim,

Following a link from the Forum listing, see:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/n..._Perinth.pdf

Specifically, Plate 3, #67, and the corresponding text on page 101. It's a die match for the Forum coin, so presumably the larger denomination. Perhaps yours could be listed as a "cf." or variant of the type?

Apart from there being a slight difference in design of the tripod on my coin (image below) and a difference in weight, everything else matches. The Edith Schonert publication does not give weights of the coins - 1. 17 mm - Bunbury. 2. 16 mm - Wien 8858, Eckhel, Cat. 1, 74 n. 4 (daraus Mionnet S. 2, 399 n. 1173), so your advice on attributing the coin is the best option.

I am very happy that I now know much more about the coin than I had hoped.

Thank you very much, Bob.

Jim
