Gold is an interesting metal. The human race seems to be genetically attracted to it. Gold is also very valuable due to it's demand, both psychological and industrial. We back our money with it officially and unofficially. If we want to impress or reward someone a gold medal is usually the first choice. The beauty of gold is that we can debase it to the extreme and it still looks good. For example pure gold is 24 k or .9999 fine. 10 k Gold, which is most commonly used for award medals and it is only .41666 fine but still looks impressive. For example here we have the Lorenz Medal awarded by the Steel Founders Society of America which was usually awarded to the Society's President upon his retirement. At 60 mm in diameter this is the largest privately issued 10 k gold medal that I have ever seen.
