Could you take a look at this half? I purchased it graded as MS-63 "scratched". The scratches are mostly on the wing of the eagle and at six o'clock. I cracked it from the holder to place it into my Dansco album. Upon further review with a magnifying glass I realized that there actually appears to be doubling on the "AMERICA" on the reverse. Were there 1917D double dies?

Sure looks doubled to me but I don't know much about these varieties.

Too bad about the scratches.

Why would someone do that to that coin?

The scratches are unfortunate..."MS-63" and "scratched", at least scratches like that, can't describe the same coin. This is merely my opinion, based on the ANA grading standards not leaving room for major damage in their mint-state descriptions. If that coin were submitted to a TPG, it could come back body bagged, labeled as "Genuine", or "AU Details--Scratched" depending on which service you sent it to.

Neither the CherryPickers' Guide, or Bruce Fox's Walking Liberty Half Dollars make mention of a doubled die 1917-D. It looks like it could be strike (or mechanical) doubling to me. Might be worth posting a picture about it in the "Varieties" section of the forum.

Also, find the white balance settings on your camera, and see if you can get more accurate color.

I don't see the doubling. With those scratches it's difficult to grade. Detail wise I would say MS-63. Because of the scratches I think it would grade MS-60.
