Sure, the Iron Horse helped connect the nation, but without the iron bridge those locomotives wouldn't have gotten very far. I started to get curious about how frequently railroad stocks and bonds depicted bridges in their vignettes -- and found nearly a dozen examples.

Actually the early bridges were made of stone -- and here is the first stone arch bridge.

A similar style bridge was built for the Lackawanna Railroad about a century later.

After the Lackawanna line merged, they kept the bridge, but flanked it with a couple figures.

Pittsburgh could boast a number of impressive bridges, with two being designed by John Roebling, who also engineered the Brooklyn Bridge. This is probably a depiction of the Sixth Street Bridge.

The Eads Bridge in St. Louis is among the most famous in the country and still stands today. The upper level was for carriages and vehicles, while trains crossed beneath them.

This last vignette is one of my favorites, showing workmen repairing the stone on a bridge footing.

Interesting and beautiful railroad bridges, thanks for sharing!

That was really early, I had to read up on this one. Apparently, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first US railroad opened for public service, in 1830. The company existed until 1987, at which time it merged into CSX Transportation (which is still in operation). And they still use that 1835 bridge!

Just noticed this one, with two trains crossing paths. The bridge is somewhat obscured by the smoke and steam.

That is an incredibly finely detailed vignette! Lots of details on the locomotive's boiler, detailed rods, etc. And four tiny guys doing various kinds of work around the tracks . Really nice!

One more that's pertinent, though not really a stock or bond. This was a promotional card that U.S. Bank Note Co. printed for the 1987 convention of the International Plate Printers, Die Stampers & Engravers Union. I'm not certain all of these are railroad bridges, but most are.

American Bank Note Co. also had numerous bridge vignettes. They were featured on a panel from the ABN Archive series.
