I had to look the story up on Wikipedia to find out what was what on the coin.
The story is set in pagan Scandinavia in the 6th century. Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, whose mead hall Heorot has been under attack by the monster Grendel for twelve years. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel's mother takes revenge and is in turn defeated.
Beowulf was mandatory reading in my high school English class. Classic adventure tale. At one point, Grendel disarms him, so Beowulf rips off the monster's arm and beats him to death with it.
Beowulf is like a 3-5 hour read, depending on your translation. I recommend it enthusiastically. The epic is a foundation for modern fantasy tales like Lord of the Rings.
