I crossed the US border 15 minutes ago and the attitude of the agent was just maddening.

I was bringing back a bunch of stuff and said "oh my silver coins are tax exempt"

He immediately cut me off and said no they aren't. People bring silver bars all the time. We weigh them and they charged tax. He literally said to me in an annoyed tone that "I don't know where you are getting your information from but you're wrong" essentially.

What do I do? Fight him? I just paid the tax and left and was glad they didn't tear up my crap lol.

But can anyone point me to an official Government of Canada website with the tax exemption information for next time? His attitude was so off-putting. I always pay my taxes for what I lawfully owe but to be told off when the agent is wrong makes me angry beyond belief.

Do you recommend filing a dispute for my taxes paid back? It's not much. It's like $20 lol.

Not all silver coins are tax exempt, I believe they must be at least .999 purity.
Where were you crossing ? In some provinces there is no exempt silver.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

He didn't even look. He said all silver is taxable.

I think he's confusing pure ungraded silver to silver coins issued by that mint that state their purity on it. He mentioned charging by weight.

I came across - years ago - with my pockets bulging with silver eagles - and SML all bought on the American side. The trick is to have something to declare - then they look at that, and not ask why you're holding your belt up. The Royal Canadian Mint has an FAQ here: https://www.mint.ca/en/faq

It is definitely worth filling out a piece of paper to have the money returned. The ROI on the time spent would justify it on its own. Beyond the money, if that guy harassed one person, he has done it to many more, and if he's enforcing the rules improperly, that needs to be corrected. Wilson is the citizen; that guy works for him, not the other way around.
