I am slowly going through my collection to catalog and preserve coins. I have many US and foreign coins in original mint-issued plastic sheets/sleeves or hard plastic holders from before the 1980s.

Should I remove the coins from the original mint-issued sets to avoid potential environmental damage? If yes, will it hurt authenticity or the value as a "set"? Thank you.

Impossible to generalize on a broad question like this.

I'd think original packaging is good. You'd need to know if what you are transferring them to would be better than what they are in. It's important to keep them in low humidity, desiccant packs or dehumidifier if you need that. I bought a cheap battery powered digital humidity gauge to monitor the air in my safe.

Let me break them down into categories then.

1. Official US mint-issued:

- US mint sets
- US Proof sets
- US commemorative sets or single coins

2. Third-party plastic or cardboard holder/capsulated (not the coin-grading service graded and capsulated):

- US mint sets or single coins
- US Proof sets or single coins
- US commemorative sets or single coins

3. Any foreign mint-issued sets or third-party in cardboard or plastics sheet, or plastic encapsulated sets or coins.

I am more concerned about the older US holders that may contain PVC, etc and ANY foreign holders.

Thank you @livingwater. I bought a while ago an adjustable dehumidifier heater rod and have a couple of Bluetooth Amazon temp/humidity gadgets for $20 that are connected to my iPhone and keeps a running graph of data and send alerts. Unfortunately, none of them do any good, because I still have not setup a coin storage cabinet and I am still sorting (very slowly) 40 years of accumulated coins in boxes that I picked up during my Uncle Sam-paid adventures all around the world :)

I am also considering using some desiccants that I use for my PCP air rifles' high-pressure pump filter. I am still in VA, but I am sure I will need them in FL. These desiccants can be put in a tabletop grill until they get their color back.

Regarding authenticity, buy the coin, not the holder.

I believe whether to remove them or not is a personal choice. As long as coins are stored properly (low humidity, stable temperature), the holder is largely irrelevant (except to an OGP collector; they do exist).

Resale does not concern me, but I must say that most coins have higher value when sold individually; it takes more time to part them out of course.

I started breaking apart my proof sets to fill holes in Dansco albums just over 30 years ago and continue to do so today. The coins seem to have done all right in that time. Again, low humidity, stable temperature. HVAC and desiccants are your friend.

Than you for the comments and tips. The main reason I ask, because some coins have a discoloration ring around them where they touch their holder. Want to prevent other coins from developing that later on.

Low-humidity/stable-temp storage seems like what I need to setup for the long term.
